Engineering & Design

What Sets the Machine Apart

Strong support matters, and so does what is built into every SPYDERCRANE® model. These are the engineering details, safety systems, and design choices that make the crane itself the right tool for confined indoor and outdoor lifting.

SPYDERCRANE overturn protection system on a rooftop jobsite

Patented Overturn Protection System

The UNIC SPYDERCRANE® Overturn Protection System is a patented UNIC-exclusive safety system included on the URW090 Series, URW200 Series, and select URW300 Series models. An onboard computer continuously measures ground pressure on each outrigger through integrated load cells. During lifting, the system monitors stability by detecting changes in ground pressure at each leg. If one outrigger begins to lose pressure and approaches safe operating limits, an alarm sounds and crane functions automatically slow. If two outriggers lose pressure, functions that could move the crane toward an unsafe configuration stop automatically. With the alarm sounding and the crane safely stopped, the operator can reposition into a stable configuration before continuing the lift.

SPYDERCRANE variable geometry outrigger positions

Variable Geometry Outriggers

Variable Geometry Outriggers allow lifts in tight spaces. A standard feature on 090 and 200 Series SPYDERCRANE® models, multiple locking positions on the outrigger swing, knee, and inner box joints let the crane set up around obstacles, on a catwalk, or in a machinery room where space is limited.

SPYDERCRANE wireless remote control

Remote Control and Pressure-Sensitive Controls

Unlike many cranes on the market, SPYDERCRANE® mini cranes offer pressure-sensitive controls that speed or slow crane functions based on operator input. Most models are equipped with a wireless remote so the operator can stand at the best vantage point for the lift. Together, these features deliver precise, operator-friendly control on confined jobsites.

Superior Materials and Construction

The SPYDERCRANE® mini crane is designed with a hexagonal keeled boom instead of a square boom, adding boom strength and reducing sway. Constructed using steel rated at 140,000–160,000 psi yield, the high tensile-high yield steel is thinner and lighter than most conventional booms while maintaining rigidity. The result is a lighter crane structure designed to maximize lifting performance.

SPYDERCRANE mini crane passing through a double doorway

Narrow Track Width and Low Center of Gravity

Depending on the series, select SPYDERCRANE® mini cranes can travel through standard single or double doors. Each machine is designed with a low center of gravity to stabilize travel and crane operations. That low center of gravity and tracked chassis deliver narrow footprints in their capacity class.

SPYDERCRANE on-board self diagnostic computer system

On-Board Self Diagnostic Computer System

SPYDERCRANE® mini cranes offer an on-board self-diagnostic computer system that continuously displays a status code on the chassis. Whether remote control batteries are dead or the crane mode switch is in the wrong position, you get an immediate diagnostic status, potentially saving hours of frustrating downtime.

SPYDERCRANE mini crane with SPYDERWEB glass manipulator

SPYDERWEB Glass Manipulators

When working with glass, coupling a SPYDERWEB glass handler with a SPYDERCRANE® mini crawler is the perfect match. Each SPYDERWEB is equipped with an independent remote control offering tilt and rotate functions for precise placement of glass panels. The SPYDERWEB mounts directly to the boom tip or can be hung from the wire rope for installation at height.

SPYDERCRANE mini crane with work platform basket

Smiley Lifting Work Platforms

When you are short of space, need to fit through a doorway, or have indoor work at height, add a Smiley Lifting work platform to your mini crawler and complete your job quickly. Work baskets are designed and manufactured to current North American standards and attach to the boom tip for personnel access where ladders and scaffolding cannot reach.

Frequently Asked Questions about the SPYDERCRANE® Mini Crane

What is a SPYDERCRANE® mini crawler?
A SPYDERCRANE® mini crawler crane is built for low-access confined areas indoors or outdoors. It rides on a dual-track chassis with spider-type outrigger legs. SPYDERCRANE® mini cranes go where conventional truck-mounted cranes and carry-deck cranes cannot due to size and access constraints.
Who makes the SPYDERCRANE® mini crane?
The UNIC mini crawler crane was designed, developed, and is manufactured by Furukawa UNIC, a Japanese company and pioneer of the mini crawler crane category. Brought to North America and adapted for US and Canadian markets by Smiley Lifting Solutions, SPYDERCRANE® branded mini cranes are supported from company headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona.
Who is Furukawa UNIC?
Furukawa UNIC is a Japanese company that has been producing hydraulic equipment since 1946. They manufacture hydraulic cylinders, truck-mounted cranes, and mini crawler cranes used worldwide.
How long has the UNIC SPYDERCRANE® mini crane been in the United States?
The UNIC mini crawler crane was first developed more than 30 years ago and has been widely used in Asian and European markets. Smiley Lifting Solutions introduced the SPYDERCRANE® brand to North America (United States and Canada).
What size mini crane do I need?
With eight series spanning 1,900 to 22,000 lbs capacity, choosing the right model depends on your lift, access, and jobsite. Call 1-844-264-8994 to speak with our team, or use the spec compare tool to review models side by side.
Are there training requirements or certifications for operators?
Depending on the size of the SPYDERCRANE® mini crane, special qualifications may or may not be required. Our support staff is a phone call away throughout your project. Users should always check local, regional, and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
Is operator training available for my jobsite?
Upon delivery, our technicians conduct a general familiarization of the machine. If additional formal training is required, SPYDERCRANE® Qualified Operator Training is available. Contact us at 1-844-264-8994 or visit our operator training page.

What safety features are SPYDERCRANE® cranes equipped with?
Standard safety features on UNIC SPYDERCRANE® mini cranes include the patented Overturn Protection System, LMI overload protection, winch cable over-winding prevention, minimum wire rope on drum prevention, automatic hook stow, hook safety latch, anti-two-block system, and an onboard self-diagnostic computer with voice messaging.
What is UNIC’s Overturn Protection System?
The Overturn Protection System is a patented UNIC-exclusive device included on the 090 Series, 200 Series, and URW306(T) models. It interfaces with the onboard computer and continually measures ground pressure at each outrigger through integrated load cells. When one outrigger loses pressure, an alarm sounds and crane functions slow. When two outriggers lose pressure, functions that could move the crane toward an unsafe position stop. The operator can then reposition the crane to a stable configuration. Unlike a basic LMI system alone, Overturn Protection responds when outrigger ground conditions change during the lift.
Does the SPYDERCRANE® mini crane have various engine and power options?
Yes. Depending on the model, options include gasoline, propane, diesel, 220–480V electric, lithium-ion battery, or combinations such as dual-fuel plus electric. The 090 Series plugs in to lift on 110V power. Other battery-equipped series run on battery power, with 110V available for charging and maintaining the system.
Do SPYDERCRANE® engines meet current EPA Tier 4 requirements?
All SPYDERCRANE® mini cranes distributed in North America are built to meet current EPA standards and regulations.

All SPYDERCRANE® models distributed in North America are manufactured to current standards and regulations, including ASME B30.5 and CSA Z150 compliance for mobile cranes. OSHA regulations require conformity to ASME B30.5.
Is a remote control available?
Yes. All SPYDERCRANE® mini cranes except the URW306(T) are equipped with a wireless four-function radio remote control with approximately 300 ft operating range. The system uses a 15-channel frequency designed to minimize interference, including in sensitive environments such as military aircraft facilities and nuclear power stations.
Can a work basket or personnel basket be used?
Yes. Smiley Lifting Solutions offers work baskets designed specifically for SPYDERCRANE® mini cranes. Each basket is designed and manufactured to current North American standards, built from lightweight chromalloy steel, and attaches to the boom tip.
Can outriggers be set up in various positions?
Yes. The URW094 offers 62 possible outrigger positions; other 090 and 200 Series models offer 52 positions. Variable geometry outriggers, combined with the Overturn Protection System, allow setup and operation in confined work environments where fixed outrigger configurations cannot fit.
Do you offer rent-to-purchase?
If you are evaluating a long-term need after a rental, ask about rent-to-purchase options. Rental payments may apply toward purchase depending on the agreement. Contact SPYDERCRANE® to discuss a rental package tailored to your project.
Is a spider crane the same as a mini crawler crane?
The term “spider crane” is sometimes used incorrectly for compact tracked lifting equipment. The proper generic terms are mini crawler crane, compact tracked crane, or mini crane. SPYDERCRANE® is the registered trademark and brand name for the compact cranes distributed by Smiley Lifting Solutions, LLC — it is not a generic term and should not be used as one.
